Livin' the glamorous life...in debt

I don’t know if I’ve told you this story, but about 16 years ago I was living this really glamorous life in NYC…….... OKAY, OKAY...when I say glamorous I mean: living in a teeny apartment with 2 roommates, barely making $30k a year working at a magazine, going out to all of the hoppin’ restaurants and clubs and drinking Starbucks like I was trying to get stock options.  So, that’s glamorous right?

Uh...well, it doesn’t sound bad, UNTIL I tell you that I also had over $30k in credit card debt and shopped like I made $100k. So 8 years later when the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic came out...I felt like I was watching my life on the big screen (AND...thinking why the eff didn’t I think to pitch that idea!).

You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to calculate that I was spending more than I was making (BUDGET TIP...Don’t do that). And I won’t get into the whole reason as to WHY I was shopping like I was being featured on "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous"...I’ll save that for another time.

I do want to talk about the one thing you NEVER really notice when you meet someone who is shopping like it is their only mission in life.  THEY.ARE.EFFING.RESOURCEFUL!

I was a MASTER at wiggling things around so I could find enough credit to purchase what I wanted to purchase. At one point, I knew I needed to change my shopping habits and I put all of my credit cards in cups of water and froze them. TRUE STORY.  And it worked...for a hot minute...until I figured out that I could just ask the store to look up my credit card number while I was checking out. WHAT!?

I had no shame and I would do what I needed to do in order to do what I wanted to do.  Read that again.  Is that sinking in?

WHAT IF, we approached EVERY day like that?  WHAT IF, I had put that energy into actually paying off my debt!?

If ever I’m having a moment where I catch myself saying:

“I can’t do this”

“I don’t know how to do this”

“I don’t know where to start”

I remember, under not-so-great circumstances, I learned how to make things happen.

This week, remember how freaking resourceful you are.  When you want something...know you have the power to figure out how to get it.

Get after it Lady!
