Can't Stick To Your Goal? This Might Be Why.

Today, I want to chat about alignment and expectations.

We are almost through June which means come July 1...we will be halfway through the year.

HOLY OVARIES!

So, this chat is timely.

The beginning of the year is full of so many resolutions. Right? Unfortunately, many of them by this point are just a faded memory yet...we might still have the intention to get after it.

“I’ve still got 6 months!”

Why is it so hard to keep that goal moving?

I have a theory...(less of a theory and more like, this is what has often gotten in my way).

Sometimes when we focus on the goal, we get overwhelmed because we haven’t broken it down to understand what achieving that goal actually means in our daily lives.

In short:  you say you want something, but your behavior says something different.

Can you relate to that?

I sure can.

Let's take a goal like: "I want to run a marathon"

The idea of it sounds great.  And when you think about the goal on a generic level, your actions might sound something like:  find a running plan, find a marathon, sign up and start training.

But if you actually looked at the real behaviors, it’s more like: wake up at 4am to run from 30 min to 2 hours, 5 days a week for 3-5 months with a long run one day (1-5 hours) a week. Plan food. Spend time mapping out running routes. Plan money for shoes, gear, massages...

The list goes on.

I had a lot of free time when I trained for my marathon but woof...I won't lie. It was a lot of running by myself for half the day on Saturday.

Can you see the difference?

We often set goals and don't think about how they will truly impact our daily lives or understand what we need to shift in order to make them happen.

One of the EASIEST steps to start getting into alignment with your goals so you can actually have realistic expectations of yourself: Write down the behavior you NEED to accomplish your goal and write down what you are actually doing.

I love to look at things side by side because it is the easiest way for my brain to compute how close or far off I am. This exercise works for pretty much any goal you might have (and it really works for your money).
